Man Utd and Chelsea monitoring Raphael Varane contract situation as Frenchman’s future remains uncertain

Real Madrid will be sweating over the contract situations of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane with both so far reportedly unwilling to renew.

Modric and Ramos contracts

Real Madrid could soon face the predicament of having a number of their players run out of contract. Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric are approaching the end of their current deals with only the latter the more confident of the two to be reaching an agreement with the club.

“I can’t say much. I’m speaking with the club and everything is going in a good direction,” said Modric regarding future talks.

However, the former does not look any closer to agreeing a new deal and has reportedly distanced himself over recent weeks and months from an agreement due to a failure of Real Madrid to offer what the Spanish captain is after.

Despite the failure to reach an agreement so far, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has spoken of his hope that Ramos will renew and be with him, should he be there, next season.

“I always want to have Sergio with me. I see him very well,” said Zidane earlier in January.

Along with the experienced heads within the club, some of the younger players are also reaching a stage whereby discussions over a new deal are needing to be had. French defender Raphael Varane has been at the club for a number of years since joining as a youngster and has developed into one of the world’s top centre backs.

An athletic figure, with a strong frame and consistent defensive record, the France international will go into the European Championships as a stalwart of Didier Deschamps’ squad.

Varane is supposedly in no rush to sign a new deal which expires in the summer of 2022 and has seen an interest in the 27-year-old grow through this indecision.

Spanish outlet Marca has claimed that the club are confident of the situation should they lose both Ramos and Varane with Bayern Munich’s David Alaba reportedly already having agreed a deal to join on a free in the summer. Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Joules Koundé and Diego Carlos are on their list of feasible reinforcement should they lose the pair.

Manchester United and Chelsea were credited with holding an interest in the player who, despite his dwindling contract length, would still command a significant fee this summer.
