United backline in tatters for Chelsea

Manchester United are left reeling after their embarrassing away day at Vicarage Road against Watford earlier today, and for more reasons than just the 4-1 heavy scoreline on their jaunt south to the capital.

Club captain Harry Maguire was sent off for a second bookable offense when he turned possession over in the defensive third of the pitch before bringing down Tom Cleverley.

It was just seven minutes after his first yellow of the night when he brought down Ismaïla Sarr, and the rash challenge allowed Watford to pad their one-goal cushion in the aftermath of the England international receiving his marching orders.

His sending off will not do him any favors either, after underfire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has had to step into the firing line and protect the United captain after a host of recent criticism this season has been levied in his direction.

This now means that Maguire will miss the clash against Chelsea next week in what could very well be the final nail in Ole’s driving career at Old Trafford if United fails to get three points against Thomas Tuchel’s table-topping Blues.

Varane also set to miss Blues clash

If the absence of Harry Maguire for a critical fixture against Chelsea was not enough, confirmation that Raphaël Varane will also miss the crunch clash against the Blues.

That leaves Solskjær with just Swedish international Victor Lindelöf and Ivorian center-back Eric Bailly as the only central options for Ole to select from.

Phil Jones is still ineligible for selection until 31 December,  leaving United precariously thin at the back and without any wiggle room for any mounting injury concerns or other match suspensions.
