Man City v Chelsea: Champions League final set for Portugal

Wembley move breaks down

It is growing increasingly unlikely that the Champions league final, despite being an ‘all-English’ affair, will be hosted in the UK.

Despite a clear stance from the Prime Minister who backed the move from Turkey having placed the nation on the UK’s red travel list.

“The Champions League is the pinnacle of European club football,” said Boris Johnson.

“And with two English teams in the final, it would be a great shame if fans were unable to attend.

“It would be brilliant to host it here if we can. I want to help supporters of both clubs see their team in action.”

UEFA did hold talks but have failed to come to an agreement and now a new destination appears to be on the agenda.

Portugal to host again

Portugal’s city of Porto will now seemingly host the final after the capital of the nation Lisbon hosted the Champions League final in 2020 and the prior delayed knockout rounds in August.

The country looks set to be the stage yet again for the event as confirmed by The Times.

This will mean Istanbul missing out to Lisbon for the second year in a row and will have to wait until 2023 to host as St Petersburg in Russia is set to host in 2022.

With Portugal on the UK’s green list, this means up to 6000 fans of each club can be in attendance for the final.

The main reason behind the collapse of Wembley and the move to the Dragao is that UEFA wanted quarantine exemptions for media, sponsors, VIPs and all of its staff which caused the negotiations to stall.

People from countries on the UK’s red list were wanted by UEFA without differentiation for the exemptions. An increase in capacity was also wanted in excess of 10,000 more.

What it will mean by moving is that the EFL’s play-off matches scheduled for the same weekend will no longer be disrupted.

But travel will come as a greater inconvenience for supporters.
