Man City ‘sign’ Fred
The transfer window may be closed, but the deals still keep coming.
According to reports out of Brazil on Thursday, Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.
Fred played twice against Man City in the Champions League this season. Shakhtar lost 2-0 in Manchester before they became the first team to beat Pep Guardiola’s men in the return match.
The rumours of Man City’s interest surfaced in January.
Back then Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport published an interview with Fred in which he talked about Man City:
A friend gave me the news saying that City and Guardiola were interested in me. I’m happy to be so well known in Europe.
But I renewed with Shakhtar for five years. If there is any interest I will talk with my agent, and the family. But I’m calm.
According to Brazilian portal UOL Esporte, Man City have now closed the deal.
Arsenal old-boy Gilberto Silva involved
It’s been announced that while Shakhtar refused to let Fred go in January, a summer transfer will no happen.
Interestingly, it’s also been revealed that Ronaldinho’s brother was the agent of Fred.
But Fred recently made a switch, joining forces with former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva for a better career plan.
Gilberto even travelled in January to seal an agreement with Manchester City, but Shakhtar didn’t want to let him go.
UOL Esporte now say that Fred wants to play for Pep Guardiola and he has a verbal agreement with Manchester City.
Shakhtar have lined up Corinthians youngster Maycon as Fred’s replacement.
It’s believed Fred could cost as much as £40 million.
Fred is under contract with Shakhtar until 2023. This season he’s bagged two goals and two assist in the Ukrainian top flight.
