Pep explains Fernandinho’s PSG start
Guardiola masterminded a victory over PSG on Tuesday, and Fernandinho was at the heart of the Manchester City performance.
Despite the presence of the younger and more mobile Rodri on the Citizens bench, the Brazilian was preferred by the Spanish coach, who has since provided an amusing explanation for his selection choice:
“It’s the birthday for Fernandinho, it’s my present,” Guardiola joked.
“Everyone is able to play, ready to play, decide this line up for the composure, I don’t know, I decide for these guys.
“We try to win the game, don’t think about the result one week ago or consequences, play to win the game.”
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Fernandinho’s stellar stint at the Etihad looks primed to come to an imminent end.
City target Rice
Talks over a new deal for next season have seemingly stalled, and that has led to the Champions League finalists seeking a replacement.
According to The Times, City will look to Declan Rice of West Ham as their preferred replacement for Fernandinho.
Chelsea and Manchester United are also admirers of the midfielder, meaning a bidding war could be on the cards.
West ham boss David Moyes has already insisted that it will take a huge fee to tempt the Hammers into selling Rice.
“I don’t know where the Bank of England is for Tomas Soucek but I’ve said with Declan, it would take the Bank of England and the Royal Bank of Scotland to get him,” Moyes said.
Rice is currently out injured, facing a fight to play again this season, and in turn at the European Championships.
His next appearance could therefore yet take place in a different coloured shirt.
