Man City’s Julian Weigl chase back on after Chelsea

Chelsea 0 – Sergio Aguero 2

Manchester City won the Community Shield on Sunday at Wembley.

The reigning Premier League champions beat Chelsea 2-0 in the high-profile pre-season friendly.

Sergio Aguero was the headline maker for Man City as the Argentine scored twice to sink the Blues.

Both sides were without many of their star players following the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Man City & Julian Weigl

The summer transfer window in England closes at 5pm on Thursday afternoon.

Will Man City sign another player before the window closes?

Pep Guardiola has so far only made limited moves in the transfer market. Riyad Mahrez’s 60 million pound move from Leicester is the club’s only significant piece of business.

Yet, on Monday morning links between Man City and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl have been revived. The likes of the Times have today reported:

Guardiola was interested in signing Fred, the Brazilian, from Shakhtar Donetsk this year, but he joined Manchester United. City have scouted Julian Weigl, of Borussia Dortmund.

Weigl, 22, is under contract at BVB until 2021.

Finally back in team training 🙌😁 #staypositive #happyface

What Pep Guardiola said about John Stones

Following the Chelsea match, Guardiola made it clear he’s interested in signing a new defensive midfielder.

Indeed, Guardiola deployed John Stone in that role in the final stages of the Community Shield. After the Chelsea game the Man City boss said:

I was happy to see him in the last ten or 15 minutes like a holding midfielder. John maybe can play there. We will see what’s going on in the future.

We are trying (to sign more players). We would like to find maybe one more because we don’t have two specific players to substitute Fernandinho. But, if he doesn’t come, there will not be anyone else.

It’s worth noting that Borussia Dortmund have been tipped to sign Axel Witsel this summer.

At the same time PSG are linked with Weigl.
