City’s left back quandary

Manchester City have been so successful in the Premier League this season due to the quality throughout their side and the depth at the disposal of Pep Guardiola.

Almost every position on the pitch has one, two or even three top class players to cover the position and this has allowed Manchester City to rotate heavily and yet remain competitive and dominant across four competitions this season.

The Citizens are on course to compete and win on all fronts in the League Cup final, the FA Cup, Premier League and the Champions League.

However there is one area of the pitch which is slightly more vulnerable than the rest.

Despite spending a significant amount of money on Benjamin Mendy from Monaco, the France international has been unable to nail down a regular spot due to injury and other issues.

Instead the Spanish coach has opted to move Portuguese international Joao Cancelo into an unorthodox left back role at times.

Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko is another option favoured by Guardiola. This has led to the possibility of Man City pursuing a left-back this summer to solidify the position.

Nuno Mendes on City’s radar

According to the Portuguese media, Manchester City are targeting Sporting Lisbon’s wonderkid full-back Nuno Mendes. Despite still only 18 years of age, Mendes has been called up to the senior national squad and started in the controversial 2-2 draw between Portugal and Serbia.

Mendes played a long pass across the pitch to iconic forward Cristiano Ronaldo who finished past the Serbian keeper. However, despite the ball clearly crossing the goal line before being cleared, officials claimed otherwise sending Ronaldo into a rage.

Off screen, Mendes was equally as frustrated but the controversy overshadowed the unbelievable pass which came from the youngster.

Mendes broke out at Sporting last season before establishing himself in the current campaign as the side’s first choice left back. He signed a new deal with the club to protect his value and therefore City will have to bid big should they want to win the race for his signature.
