Major update on Jesse Lingard’s Man United future as Barcelona lie in wait

Lingard nearing second Man United exit

Jesse Lingard looks all but set to break his 20-plus-year relationship with Manchester United after talks over a new contract collapsed.

Both the Telegraph’s James Ducker and BBC Sport’s Simon Stone are reporting that both parties have been unable to reach agreeable terms which have caused negotiations to completely deflate. This leaves the door open for Lingard to seek a loan move away from the club in January as his contract runs down its final six months before he becomes available on a free transfer in the summer.

Should the situation remain unchanged, a pair of European giants in the form of Barcelona and AC Milan could be set to pounce on a free move for the England international, signaling an opportunity for the Carrington academy graduate to revitalize his career at the top level in Europe.

Three Premier League clubs had expressed interest in Lingard previously, given his situation at United, with West Ham, Newcastle, and Southampton keeping track of contract developments at Old Trafford.

While it remains unclear where he may head to next, what does seem almost certain is that Lingard is destined to enter the latter stages of his career away from his boyhood club.

Is Ole to blame?

Things were going brilliantly for Jesse Lingard during the second half of last season, in what was a fantastic loan stint with David Moyes’ upstart West Ham United.

The Red Devils midfielder netted 9-goals and added 5-assists across 16-appearances in the Premier League, and looked set to try to get his career at Old Trafford back on track after falling wildly out of favor with Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

But United handled their summer business aggressively and recruited both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho to reinforce the forward line, throwing two fresh – and highly talented – roadblocks in Lingard’s pathway to minutes.

The question therefore becomes why Solskjær opted to keep Lingard rather than sell him on for what would amount as pure profit for the club given his emergence from the academy, especially considering the fact that West Ham was eager to bring him to the London Stadium on a full-time basis.

Instead, the Norwegian headmaster insisted that he was still a valuable part of the squad, but actions spoke louder than words when – until now – Lingard has logged just 63-minutes of action in the league this season. With all that in mind, no one could possibly blame Jesse Lingard for running away from the club as fast as possible. His career depends on it.
