Liverpool vs Manchester City: Champions League preview

Liverpool host Premier League table toppers Manchester City at Anfield on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie.

Liverpool progressed to the last eight of the competition after a 5-0 aggregate win over Porto. The Reds scored all five in the first leg in Portugal before playing out a 0-0 draw at Anfield, a result which extends their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 12 matches.

Mohamed Salah continued his absolutely ridiculous goalscoring form on Saturday. The Egyptian netted his 29th Premier League goal of the season – and 37th overall – in Liverpool’s come-from-behind 2-1 win at Crystal Palace. Sadio Mane scored Liverpool’s first goal.

The victory all but assures Liverpool a spot in next season’s Champions League. The Reds are 10 points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, although they have played a game more than their London rivals.

Man City were 5-2 aggregate winners in their round of 16 tie against Basel. Man City followed up their 4-0 away win in the first leg with a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad.

City beat Everton 3-1 on Saturday, producing one of the best first half performances in recent memory. Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling all netted in the first period before Guardiola’s men let off the gas in the second half.

A win for Man City on Saturday in the Manchester derby would see them clinch the Premier League title with six matches to spare – against their biggest rivals, no less.

12 goals have been scored in the two Premier League meetings between these sides this season. Manchester City beat 10-man Liverpool 5-0 in September.

The Reds got their revenge in January, beating Man City 4-3 at Anfield and inflicting City’s only defeat of the league season to date.

On fire

No side has scored more goals in this season’s Champions League than Liverpool’s 28. City, meanwhile, have managed 19 goals in their European campaign.

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino begins the week as the joint-third leading goalscorer of the competition with seven goals, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Wissam Ben Yedder.

Mane and Salah both have six – the same number as Neymar and Lionel Messi. Despite only featuring in the group stage, Philippe Coutinho scored 5 times for the Reds before joining Barcelona in January.

James Milner has by far the most assists in this season’s competition with 7. Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne is in joint-second place with 4.
