Liverpool to battle Barcelona for Raheem Sterling

English giants Liverpool are set to square off with Barcelona next summer in an unexpected transfer battle for Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling.

According to SportBild’s Christian Falk (cited by Empire of the Kop via Sport Witness), Liverpool will be in the market for a forward in the summer after the club failed to add additional options to their frontline after bringing in RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konaté earlier this year.

Falk suggests that Liverpool should expect competition from Barcelona amongst other top clubs in Europe, after Sterling made it clear that he sees himself leaving the Etihad after the current season in an attempt to find more minutes on the pitch.

Premier League rivals Arsenal were also rumored to be circling around the former Liverpool winger, undoubtedly owing to the previous working relationship that Sterling fostered with current Gunners manager Mikel Arteta while the Spaniard was an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola in Manchester.

Despite Liverpool boasting Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino, and Diogo Jota, the acquisition of Sterling would go a long way towards adding even further depth in quality at Anfield, as the club look to perennially challenge for honors on multiple fronts.

No longer the tip of the spear at Man City

Manchester City and boss Pep Guardiola owe a great deal to Raheem Sterling, despite the England international no longer being viewed as a key piece of the puzzle at the Etihad.

Since his move from Liverpool, Sterling has an absolutely brilliant statistical return on the blue half of Manchester, netting 115-goals and adding a further 89-assists in just 304-appearances across all competitions. His contributions have pushed City to three Premier League titles as well as other major honors.

But a breakdown in his relationship with Guardiola after City’s 2-0 loss against Manchester United last season is said to be the root cause as to why he is now firmly playing second-fiddle to other attacking options.

There is no telling if his situation would improve back at Liverpool, but still only 26-years-old, and on the cusp of his prime footballing years, rekindling his relationship with the Anfield faithful could be just what Raheem Sterling needs.
