Utd fall, Liverpool close in Forbes
Forbes have released their list of the top richest clubs in the world and in a surprising turn it has seen Bayern Munich overtake Manchester United into third place behind the two top Spanish clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid.
United’s failure to become a champion in England or Europe since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson is seemingly beginning to allow other sides in Europe to catch, and in some cases such as Bayern, overtake them.
It has also allowed Liverpool to close the gap after successfully winning the Champions League and Premier League.
What is most impressive about how Liverpool have grown themselves is that it has been done the through excellent sales and purchases in the transfer market.
Whilst the club has paid huge fees on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Diogo Jota etc, they have also sold well in the last half decade with the likes of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho making the club massive fees.
Not only that but players such as Jordan Ibe, Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster have been sold for staggeringly large fees despite their considered quality.
Other English clubs such as Manchester City (6th) Chelsea (7th) Arsenal (8th) Spurs (10th) Everton (15th) West Ham (18th) and Leicester (19th) all feature in the top 20.
Klopp wary of Leeds
Despite Liverpool’s climb up the financial pyramid, their title defence has been poor and should they fail to reach the Champions League qualification spots they could see themselves take a step back financially after some heavy spending.
“Hopefully we’ve turned it around,” he said regarding the Reds’ form.
“But we have tough opponents coming up with their own targets. We have Real Madrid, of course, but then in the league we play Leeds and I think everybody who saw them fighting today against Man City knows that it is not a walk in the park.
“It will be a tough one; I think they are leading in all physical stats in the league, so that means if you want to get something there you have to do a lot and that’s what we will do. For the moment, it feels great and that we turned the game around feels even better.”
Liverpool sit in 6th, 3 points behind West Ham in 4th and 4 points behind stuttering Leicester City in 3rd.
