Liverpool handed double boost vs AC Milan as Ibrahimovic out & Giroud unable to play 90 minutes

Liverpool and AC Milan clash again

16 years on from the most famous Champions League result, AC Milan and Liverpool are set to clash once again, this time in the group stage rather than the final.

The pair of sides have been drawn in a tricky group, along with FC Porto and current Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool will be looking to go further than their disappointing defeat to Real Madrid in the quarter finals last time out, while AC Milan will be returning to the competition for the first time since the 2013/14 season, courtesy of their brilliant Serie A campaign last time out.

However, the Reds have been handed an early advantage in the group, as it has been revealed that key forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be available for selection due to injury.

The Swede has only just recovered from a serious knee injury, and netted on his return to red and black last weekend. However, he will not be able to test himself against Van Dijk this time around.

Giroud not fit enough for full game

Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, Milan boss Stefano Pioli revealed that Olivier Giroud was also not fit enough to play the full game, further limiting the options available to the Rossoneri up top:

“He won’t be able to complete a full 90 – being out for two weeks is tough – but he’s doing well and is available. Ante, meanwhile, is going into this one following a brilliant performance; I’m sure that they will be ready and that both of them have characteristics that fit well with the rest of the team.”

This leaves Ante Rebic and Rafael Leao as the only two fully fit recognised strikers, which could play into Jurgen Klopp’s sides’ hands perfectly as they look to kick off their group in style.
