Liverpool ‘have signed’ wonderkid Issahaku: Watch the AFCON Player of the Tournament in action

Premier League giants Liverpool have clinched the signing of highly-regarded talent Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, according to reports in his home country of Ghana.

AFCON exploits

Issahaku, 17, exploded onto the scene in Africa over the last couple of years.

The gifted starlet, who can play in both midfield and attack, first began to turn heads based on his remarkable exploits at club level. After being handed his debut for Ghanaian 2nd-division outfit Steadfast FC at the age of just 15, Issahaku quickly went about showcasing his remarkable talents.

Despite lining out against players much his senior, the left-footer managed to rack up an eye-watering 13 direct goal contributions in his first 13 senior appearances.

Such fine form, in turn, saw Issahaku quickly earn an international call-up, lining out for Ghana for the first time at U17 level in 2020. After just two outings, however, it was decided that the attacker, at 17, was ready to feature for the Black Stars’ U20s.

In turn, Issahaku was included in his country’s squad for this year’s U20 AFCON tournament. And it was here that it quickly became evident just what a prodigious talent Ghana truly have on their hands. The Steadfast man quickly went on to establish himself as his nation’s star performer, notching two goals and an assist, en route to eventual AFCON glory. Issahaku was even honoured with the award for player of the tournament.

In turn, it came as little surprise to hear that a number of clubs from across Europe soon began to express an interest in Issahaku’s services, ahead of next season.

And, as outlined above, this weekend, it appears that one such outfit have beaten out the competition for the gifted youngster.

Citing quotes on the part of Steadfast president and owner Haruna Iddrisu, Football Ghana definitively state that Premier League heavyweights Liverpool have completed Issahaku’s signing.

Bayer Leverkusen were initially thought to have been leading the race for the African, but the Reds, at the last minute, swooped to thrash out a deal worth in excess of €1 million. Issahaku has put pen to paper on a 5-year deal, ahead of being loaned to Sporting CP for the 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking in an interview with Football Ghana, Steadfast chief Iddrisu explained:

‘When I started negotiation for Abdul Issahaku Fatawu’s move to abroad, it started from more than 1 million euros and this means if we get corporate sponsorships, we can do better.’

‘We need to do more to make our football attractive and by doing that we get more hands-on board to sponsor our football because on weekends.’

‘Football is the business everywhere so I am pleading to the corporate world. I am doing Steadfast for the love of football and for the people of my home town.’
