Kylian Mbappe’s goal against Barcelona somehow beats Giroud’s overhead kick to win the UCL goal of the week

Kylian Mbappe’s goal against Barcelona somehow beats Giroud’s overhead kick to win the UCL goal of the week

Giroud goal places 3rd

In one of the most controversial decisions of the week, Kylian Mbappe’s goal against Barcelona was decided to be the UEFA Champions League goal of the week.

This came in the same round of matches in which Olivier Giroud turned up at Atletico Madrid’s home stadium and scored an overhead kick to take Chelsea into a 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg.

Granted the PSG forward scored a hat-trick in the Camp Nou in order to give the French side a seemingly unassailable lead, but based on the quality of the finishes, the Chelsea striker will certainly feel hard done by.

The injustice could be compounded even further due to the fact that Giroud did not even place second on the list finishing behind Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Mahmoud Dahoud. The German curled an effort past the Sevilla keeper from outside the box, similar to Mbappe’s strike to claim second spot.

4th place was awarded to another similar strike as Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy’s curling effort gave Madrid a 1-0 win at Atalanta.

Tuchel praises Giroud impact

Tuchel explained the reasons behind the decision not to start Giroud against Southampton and instead bring him into the game in midweek.

“He [Giroud] is always positive and it’s a big factor for the group. Whether he starts or is on the bench, he has all these qualities,” said Tuchel.

“We thought long about putting him in the team against Southampton. It wasn’t a decision to create the possibility that Oli starts for us against Atlético.”

“We analysed Southampton, a very aggressive team that attacks very high up the pitch. So, we expected more space behind and we wanted to have more key runs.”

With so many attacking options and Giroud now 34, it is unsurprising not to see him start week-in week-out but he will be wanting to give Tuchel a selection headache as much as possible.
