Arteta defends Willian & Pepe

Arsenal travel to Southampton for the second time in just four days hoping to avenge their 4th round FA Cup loss from Saturday. Arsenal used a heavily rotated squad in the 1-0 defeat and Mikel Arteta was defiant in relation to criticisms of the players such as Willian and Nicolas Pepe who came in for the inform Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe.

“No,” he said when asked whether the players who started were not good enough. “I think we gave them control of the game with a lot of unforced errors that we created ourselves. And without them really creating any big chances. But it’s things that we have to improve.”

“It’s part of the way that we are evolving as a team. To understand which areas we have to exploit and which areas we have to be giving the ball away, we have to. And be more secure in certain situations. It’s part of it.”

The aforementioned duo which started the match in Arsenal’s frontline have faced significant criticism from proportions of the Arsenal fan base and Arteta was questioned as to whether supporters are right to expect more from Willian and Pepe.

“Well, I don’t know,” he said. “They’re entitled to ask for anything. What I’m saying is that they tried to give their best.”

“You could see how hard they tried. Sometimes with more or less quality but the intention is there and the willingness is there and this is what we demanded them to do. And after decision making, the final pass, the final ball, the opportunities they have. It’s the end product that’s the hardest thing in football.”

Arteta is expected to make significant changes to the Arsenal team for tonight’s bout with the Saints.

Tierney doubt, Auba out

Two of the players which Arsenal were unable to use on Saturday were that of Kieran Tierney and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The latter experienced some personal problems which kept him out of the game and, according to the latest fitness update from Arsenal’s website, he is also to be unavailable for the match tonight.

‘Will be unavailable for Tuesday’s match due to personal family reasons,’ it read on the Arsenal website regarding the number 14.

Gabriel Martinelli started at left-wing against Southampton and is likely to be expected to play there once again having been substituted in the second half in order to save fitness. As per the details of the Gabonese forward’s absence, these have yet to be revealed.

Secondly, Kieran Tierney has been arguably been the first name on the Arsenal team-sheet of late. The Scottish international has provided additional creativity and crossing quality down the left-hand side and Arsenal have deputised with two right-footed players when needing to rest the full-back. However, a slight injury could keep him out.

‘Right calf. Kieran is being assessed for discomfort in the right lower leg,’ read the Arsenal statement.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles performed poorly against Crystal Palace and was eventually substituted and the Portuguese full-back Cedric played there and struggled against his former side in the cup match at the weekend.

With Sead Kolasinac leaving the club on loan and returning to his former side Schalke, Arsenal have no senior natural left-footed presence in the role.
