“How many goals he scored against the best teams . . . not many, or none.” Mourinho’s Bale dig

“How many goals he scored against the best teams . . . not many, or none.” Mourinho’s Bale dig

Bale, Mourinho struggles

Mourinho struggled during his tenure at Spurs and was sacked from his job ahead of the League Cup final. Failing to win a trophy at a club for the very first time.

One of the major issues he found was managing Gareth Bale.

Bale returned to north London with great expectations but struggled to gain regular minutes as a starter and Mourinho was continually asked about it.

One time he got so frustrated he told a reporter that they didn’t deserve an answer to the question.

Bale once put on Instagram that he had a “good session” which Mourinho took exception to and disagreed with in a press conference.

Clearly no love lost between the pair.

Mourinho’s Bale dig

It seems the animosity between the pair has been revived. Mourinho spoke with Henry Winter of The Sunday Times and described Wales as a nation relying on Bale and Ramsey.

But, interestingly, chose to reference how many ‘big teams’ Bale has scored against this season.

“Over the years they rely a lot on Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. But when I look to the season, how many matches has Ramsey played? Lots of injuries,” he said,

“When we look to Gareth and how many great performances he had, how many goals he scored against the best teams . . . not many, or none. They have the pride, the group, the organisation. They know how to create a situation to try to get the best out of these more talented players in attack.”

Bale scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season.

Brighton (1), Burnley (2), Crystal Palace (2), Southampton (1), Sheffield United (3) and Leicester City (2). The latter being the only side to finish in the top half of the table.

Mourinho might have a point, however, an unprovoked jibe towards a player he coached less than a few months ago isn’t the best look.
