Kane injury boost

Spurs’ form has dipped heavily of late and more concerning has been a big injury hit to the squad. Mourinho confirmed Harry Kane’s issue in the defeat to Liverpool. Not only being affected by the defeat but the sting of losing his star man was clearly of great concern.

“Two ankles, the first was a bad tackle, it was Thiago, the second one I didn’t know well,” he said. “But two injuries in both ankles, the second one worst than the first one – a few weeks, I don’t know. There are some players you can’t replace.”

“For Harry to leave a game when he wants to play with the team losing, for Harry to come out means it is not a nothing injury. For how long I can’t tell you. I don’t know, we will have to wait and see.”

However, there was positive news provided by injury analyst Ben Dinnery, revealing Kane could return after a couple weeks to face Manchester City.

“The news is pretty good. On the day of the Liverpool game, no idea. Then the next day we were thinking about three weeks, but Harry is optimistic. He has the experience of some injuries in ankles and in his mind it is a couple of weeks.”

This will mean Kane would miss the league matches against Chelsea and West Brom before their 5th round FA Cup tie with Everton.

Spurs tried Bale in the Kane role

Without Kane, Spurs clearly lacked a cutting-edge in the final third as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against relegation battlers Brighton on Sunday evening. Jose Mourinho tried to explain after the match that he had set his team up to play in a similar system to which they succeed so well in when Kane is on the pitch.

The Portuguese coach said that he had tried to use Gareth Bale in a similar role in addition to Steven Bergwijn. But it was not enough to get the win over the Seagulls.

“I am not going to individualise the performance,” Mourinho said when asked about missing players like Kane. “We tried in the first half to give the team similar dynamic as we have hen Harry is playing. We felt to connect with Son, the way we work all the time in the sense of Harry, we tried to do that with Gareth coming in side with his left foot vision.”

“We tried to give that with Bergwijn too but the team was not good in the first half. In the second half we improved very much.”

Mourinho was asked if Bale’s loan from Real Madrid could be classed as a failure but the former Los Blancos coach was bullish in his response.

“We lost a match and when we lose a match, we lose a match, we lose all together,” Mourinho said. “We don’t lose because of one player, or one bad performance. We lose together. So I don’t think it’s fair, especially for myself, in representation of my team, I don’t think it’s fair to answer to you to that question, especially now.”

Whether Bale comes in against Chelsea on Thursday could provide some insight into how much Mourinho trusts the Welshman to fill the large Kane-shaped hole in his side.
