Guardiola hints at £100 million-plus City signing as Spaniard praises Erling Haaland

Pep Guardiola

£100 million City player

Pep Guardiola was asked ahead of Manchester City’s quarter-final Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund if he could ever see the club spending more than £100 million on a player.

It was unsurprising to see this question considering the fact that Manchester City have been linked with Dortmund’s Erling Haaland for a significant period of time with the fee expected to exceed that £100 million mark.

“Spending a lot of money on one player doesn’t give you an advantage to win. Football is a team game, everyone makes a contribution. Competitions are not won by one player, it is every player,” said Guardiola.

“So far the club has decided not to spend close to £100m for a player. Maybe in the future it will happen when the club decides it is necessary to improve the team for the next 5-10 years but so far the organisation decides not to do it and that’s why we didn’t do it but maybe in the future.”

Could the former Barca boss be hinting at a big summer move for a ‘necessary’ player?

Pep’s Haaland praise

When Guardiola was asked about the Haaland specifically he attempted to bat the question away with a swift appreciation of his talents.

He said, “All I can say is he is an exceptional striker for his age. The numbers speak for themselves. He’s a fantastic player, that’s all.”

However, media attendees wanted more and then when pressed further on the Norwegian Guardiola said, “In that age scoring that amount of goals is not easy to find. The numbers speak for themselves.”

“When that happens it is because he can score right, left, counter, box, header. He’s a fantastic striker. Everybody knows it. A blind guy can realise he is a good striker. It is not necessary to be a manager.”

Yet, it seems, still no concrete evidence that he would indeed be interested in signing him. It is unlikely this however will stop further attempts to get the inside scoop on Guardiola’s summer transfer plans.
