Former Arsenal teammate hints at Martin Ødegaard return to Spain

Former Arsenal teammate hints at Martin Ødegaard return to Spain

Ødegaard may have future away from Arsenal

Norwegian starlet Martin Ødegaard may not be a part of Arsenal’s long-term squad building plan under Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar after all, at least according to former club mate Mat Ryan.

According to Football.London, the former Arsenal back-up keeper turned Real Sociedad reserve shot-stopper has hinted at Ødegaard not ruling out a return to Spain.

The Strømsgodset youth product and Drammen-native was viewed as a key piece of the puzzle for Arteta in his reshuffle of the first-team picture at Arsenal, and named as the prime target of a very active summer transfer window that saw him complete his full move away from Real Madrid for £30million after a torrid spell in the Spanish capital.

Ødegaard’s season-long loan at Arsenal last season brought fresh life to the young Norwegian, who felt at home at the Emirates after spending half the season acclimatizing himself to the Premier League while fitting in seamlessly in the Gunners’ tactical schematic.

But Ryan is not so sure that his long-term future lay under the command of Arteta, but rather back at the Reale Arena with Real Sociedad; a club that he also dazzled for;

“Before I knew Real were interested in me, he [Odegaard] told me that Real, because of his experience here, was a great team, a 10 out of 10 in everything: the team, the life here, the public…everything.

And now I agree with him. He’s comfortable at Arsenal, but he’s open to coming back one day, for sure.”

Real Sociedad return could be on the cards

Despite finalizing his move to Arsenal after a successful half-season on loan in 2020-21, Martin Ødegaard was very much in the crosshairs of Real Sociedad after the Norwegian enjoyed a highly-successful full season in Basque Country away from Madrid in 2019-20.

Across 36-appearances in all competitions for Los Txuri-Urdin, the Norwegian wonderkid scored 7-goals and added a further 9-assists and was unquestionably one of the key pieces under Imanol Alguacil.

With Arsenal being tied to apparent serious interest in Club Brugge KV’s Dutch starlet Noa Lang, and more recently with potential curiosity in wantaway Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, a loss of Ødegaard down the road may not hit the club with a gut-punch as hard as some may expect.

But for the time being, it is clear that Mikel Arteta values the Norwegian international highly, and one can expect him to remain as an instrumental player for the Spaniard for the near future.
