Former Chelsea stopper believes Kepa is ready to be no.1 after “training like a machine”

Former Chelsea stopper believes Kepa is ready to be no.1 after “training like a machine”

Willy Caballero’s Chelsea stint

Argentine goalkeeper Willy Caballero swapped Manchester City for Chelsea in 2017, spending 4 seasons in west London as third-choice goalkeeper.

With his former teams set to go head-to-head in a matter of hours, Caballero was of course discussing his split loyalties. The shot-stopper made 48 appearances for the sky blues, before racking up a further 38 for the Londoners.

Unsurprisingly given his most recent stint, however, much of the focus surrounded the Chelsea Goalkeeping situation

Caballero backs Mendy but says Kepa is ready to be no.1

Speaking on the situation between the sticks, Caballero echoed the general sentiment that so many have noted about Edouard Mendy, saying:

“Well, I believe both goalkeepers are fantastic and last season they had great competition,”

“They are competing right now and are showing that everyone can play.

“Edouard is fantastic and last season he showed that he is one of the best because he is making difficult saves that probably a lot of goalkeepers would find it hard to make.

Following Kepa’s return to the side in the penalty shoot-out win over Aston Villa however, Caballero was quick to heap praise on the Spaniard, revealing that:

“Kepa is showing that he can work in the shadows and be ready for everything.

“Last season was so difficult for him. Last season he was training as a machine. I believe that he has shown Thomas that working like that he can play as a No.1.”

The 39-year-old continued:

“I believe this is the point for him and for every second goalkeeper; to try to to be in the team and have a lot of targets during the season.

Can Kepa oust Mendy this season, or will he have to continue to play second fiddle?
