Everton owner provides update on the future of Rafa Benitez following derby thrashing

Rafa Benitez lost his job at Everton on Sunday night

Everton mauled by Liverpool in derby thrashing

The Merseyside Derby had a very one-sided feel to it for the most part, as Liverpool put four past their city rivals at Goodison park to claim the bragging rights for another season.

Although it looked close at half-time, with Demarai Gray reducing the scoreline to a respectable 2-1, the second-half was entirely one-sided as Jurgen Klopp’s side showed the quality that makes them amongst the favourites for the Premier League title this season.

It follows on from Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield, as well as their 4-0 victory over Southampton at the weekend.

To rub further salt in the wounds, jubilant Liverpool fans directed their chants at former Red, and current Everton boss Rafael Benitez.

Those that remained at Goodison Park with the score at 4-1 were treated to a rendition of “Rafa’s at the wheel” as the Spaniard looked on, surely fearing for his job after a limp performance from his side.

With Arsenal next up on Monday night, a decision needed to be made, with the Toffees having taken just 2 points from a possible 24 over recent weeks, and having lost four of their last five games.

“Needs more time”

And now, it appears that such a decision has indeed been come to. Everton owner Farhad Moshiri provided an update on Benitez’s future whilst speaking to radio station talkSPORT, and it did not prove good news for those that want to see the back of the Spaniard.

Speaking to Jim White, Moshiri revealed that he feels that Benitez needs more time in charge at the club in order to turn things around, and that he will not be sacked.

The problems at Everton run far deeper than the manager, with reckless spending having yielded next to no success season upon season. However, a loss to Arsenal could prove enough to finally put an end to Benitez’s free-fall in charge of the Toffees.
