Cavani desperate for Man United departure

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani had, last year, just about had enough of life in the Premier League at Old Trafford, having been linked with interest in ending his association with the Red Devils.

According to Sun Sport, the Uruguayan icon went to great lengths in trying to manufacture a departure during the winter window, when he personally phoned Boca Juniors vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme, according to the Azul y Oro deputy chief.

Cavani is no doubt desperate for game time once more after being placed behind summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order, and has registered just 274-minutes of action for Manchester United this season across all competitions.

Riquelme told Argentina-based source TNT Sports: “In January, Cavani called me to tell me that he wanted to come because he was playing little there. I’ve been talking to him for a long time and he called me in January to come over because he wasn’t playing there. I remember we talked one day and the next day he came in and scored two goals in the last minutes. He made a great comeback.” Note: quotes via AS citing TNT.

Uruguayan wanted abroad

The former Paris Saint-Germain and SSC Napoli star could yet be afforded a fresh start away from Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract expires.

According to a report in Brazilian outlet Mercado da Bola, domestic giants Palmeiras are interested in a free agent move for the Uruguayan in the summer when his terms in Manchester come to an end.

Additionally, a pair of global giants in the vein of Barcelona and Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest in the veteran frontman.

Real are thin through the middle in the squad chart behind star man Karim Benzema, while Barça is struggling to find a true centre-forward in the wake of Sergio Agüero’s heart concern.

With elite-level clubs still keen on his services, there is time for the 34-year-old Cavani to have a proper swan song in what has otherwise been an absolutely fantastic career in Europe.
