Suffering Liverpool

Liverpool were unable to score for their third league match in a row after their 0-0 draw with Manchester United. Despite starting with their famous front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, none of the trio were able to convert.

In fact, Jurgen Klopp’s side have only scored one goal in their previous four league outings which was in the 1-1 draw with relegation battlers West Bromwich Albion. The key in Liverpool winning the title last season was that the majority of their side were able to remain fit although losing the likes of Allison for some games did look to threaten their consistency.

This season, defensive chaos has meant for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’s long-term problems and even full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson fitness issues have derailed a seamless defence of the title.

This has led to the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, who are typically midfielders, deputising in centre-back roles. Even youngsters such as Rhys Williams have had to play in notable Premier League fixtures.

But a recent loss of summer signing of Diogo Jota has seemingly put a dent in Klopp’s goalscoring plans.

Jota not ready for return

Although Jota arrived at Liverpool very much thought of as a second-string player and someone to provide backup for the prolific front three, he quickly became an integral member of the German coach’s team.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup 3rd round with Aston Villa Klopp said regarding the Portuguese’s injury, “It will still take time.”

However, The Times‘ Paul Joyce has seemingly revealed the earliest Reds fans could see him is next month.

‘Jota has been out for five weeks since damaging knee ligaments in the Champions League dead rubber with FC Midtjylland on December 9 and is unlikely to return before the end of the month given he was still wearing a brace on the injury recently,’ he wrote.

Xherdan Shaqiri did return from injury and started against Man United but was unable, despite a number of long-range efforts, to have a serious impact on the game and was eventually replaced by Belgian forward Curtis Jones. Klopp will be hoping Jota can speed up his recovery and return soon.
