Dimitri Payet after the Europa League final

Dimitri Payet accused of jinxing himself & Marseille before Atletico Madrid defeat

Marseille 0 – Atletico Madrid 3

Antoine Griezmann inspired Atletico Madrid to a 3-0 win over Marseille in the Europa League final in Lyon on Wednesday evening.

Griezmann scored on 21 and 49 to seal the final. Atletico Madrid captain Gabi completed the win late on with Marseille well beaten.

Arguably, Marseille’s hopes of winning the Europa League were ended within 32 minutes of kick off.

Once Griezmann scored the opener it was always going to be an uphill task against an Atletico Madrid side that barely ever concedes.

And, the loss of Dimitri Payet to a hamstring injury saw OM shorn of their best attacking option.

Dimitri Payet’s World Cup hopes over as well

It was the bitterest of blows for Payet, who was in tears at the final whistle and as he left the pitch in Lyon.

Not only was Payet ruled out of the Europa League final with injury but his World Cup hopes now look over.

France name their squad today and Didier Deschamps was expected to include the former West Ham playmaker.

Did Dimitri Payet jinx himself before the Europa League final?

High class football has always been a superstitious game.

On Wednesday night, just before kick off, many football fans noticed that Dimitri Payet had touched the Europa League trophy on his way out with the two teams.

Even before the injury, there were football supporters on social media pointing out that this rarely ends well.
