Diego Costa expected to sign for Benfica on free transfer

Diego Costa expected to sign for Benfica on free transfer

Costa to Benfica

Former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa looks to be on the verge of an agreement with Portuguese side Benfica.

The Spanish forward played a number of games for Atletico this season, before his contract was terminated in January.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, French club Marseille had offered a deal to the former Spain international, which was rejected, but now, having received an offer from Portuguese heavyweights Benfica, Costa has seemingly decided to remain in Europe for the latter years of his career.

The hitman originally joined Atletico Madrid from Portugal-based club Braga, and is therefore no stranger to Liga NOS. Benfica already have Darwin Nunez and Haris Seferovic as striking options, with the Uruguayan very highly rated. It will not be a walk in the park for Costa to get a place in the starting eleven.

Dembele must take chance

Brought in to replace the outgoing Costa in January was Lyon striker Moussa Dembele. The former Celtic forward provides the physical presence, striking ability and pace which Atleti lost through Costa’s departure.

However, he has struggled for regular game time due to a number of factors, and coach Diego Simeone hopes that the quality within such minutes will soon begin to increase.

“I always say that the number of minutes is not important. What matters is the quality of these minutes,” said Simeone.

“I hope that Dembele can bring us what we hoped for when he arrived in the team.”

Despite a bout of Covid-19, and his lack of recent game time, the situation has now grown worse for Dembele, on a very personal level. The French forward collapsed in training, and needed medical attention yesterday.

He left in his own car, though, which suggested that the Frenchman was not in too bad a state.
