Fresh competition for Lampard as fellow candidate ‘impresses’ in Norwich City interview

Fresh competition for Lampard as fellow candidate ‘impresses’ in Norwich City interview

Smith challenging Lampard for Norwich posting

Former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith may not be out of management for long after interviewing with Norwich City for the vacancy at Carrow Road.

According to Sky Sports, Smith is said to have impressed during his meeting with the club’s hierarchy led by sporting director Stuart Webber, as the Canaries look to find the successor to former manager Daniel Farke.

Smith was sacked by Aston Villa on Sunday amid what has been a very trying 2021-22 Premier League season for the Villans, who are currently on a five-match losing run while sitting just two points above the drop zone after a summer of investment in the wake of Jack Grealish’s departure for Manchester City.

But now, Smith is said to be rivaling former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard for the managerial posting at Norwich, after the iconic ex-Blues midfielder looked all but set to take the job.

The pair are viewed as the most logical candidates to take the reigns despite the club still being interested in interviewing FK Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen.

Canaries must make the smart appointment

After climbing back into the Premier League this season under Daniel Farke for the second time with the German at the helm, Norwich seemingly did all the right things when it came to how they negotiated the transfer market in the summer.

In the wake of selling star man Emi Buendía to Dean Smith’s Villa for ~£33 million, Norwich shelled out £56 million on no less than nine players in a bid to add quality in depth, but also upgrade the starting XI.

Premier League security was certainly on the mind of Stuart Webber, and transfer coups for the likes of Milot Rashica, Josh Sargent, Christos Tzolis, Billy Gilmour, and Ozan Kabak were all smart moves for a club of the size of Norwich. However, they ultimately failed to make the difference under Farke as the Canaries logged just one win and managed to find the back of the net just five times in eleven Premier League fixtures this season.

The pieces are there for Norwich to give a far better account of themselves than they have up to this point in the campaign, but it remains to be seen whether Dean Smith or Frank Lampard is the better choice.
