Nicolas Pépé disappoints again; stats in Palace draw shows failure to settle

Arsenal may be on a 5-match unbeaten run in the Premier League but there is little in the way of confidence that can be extracted from their recent performances and their lucky 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night is a microcosm of what ails the club at the moment.

Alexandre Lacazette came to the rescue in the 5th minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners in an overall performance that was criticized by club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on his personal Instagram account in the wake of the result.

One of many players that failed to deliver at the Emirates last night was Ivorian winger Nicolas Pépé, who had a torrid time of it against Patrick Vieira‘s Eagles.

The stats behind Pépé and his failure to contribute once again under Mikel Arteta this season shows a player who may not be able to ever make the grade under the command of the Spaniard.

Pépé was credited with losing possession an astounding 22-times last night, won just three of fifteen contested duels, while completing only one of six attempted dribbles. Additionally, the Ivorian failed to receive possession adequately eight times, the most by Arsenal player since Alexis Sánchez in 2017.

Such a wasteful performance that showed a real lack of technical standard and tactical understanding for what many perceive Arteta hopes to achieve at the Emirates is a damning indictment of the fact that Pépé has truly failed to come close to repaying the £72million the club paid to acquire his services from LOSC Lille in the summer of 2019.

Arsenal eyeing replacements?

With Hale End products Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka currently the first-choice options in the wide areas for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, further evidence is provided in the notion that Pépé is just making it under the former Gunners midfielder.

But recent reports linking the club with further investment in another wide player could offer more than ample proof that his time may be running short at the Emirates.

Arsenal have been linked with Club Brugge KV’s Dutch starlet Noa Lang, as well as wantaway Manchester City’s England international Raheem Sterling after the former Liverpool man spoke about his desire to potentially leave the Etihad in search of minutes.

Ousmane Dembélé could also come into contention as an option for the club should Pépé eventually head for the exit row, after the French international is said to be potentially in the shop window.

Newcastle could certainly look to prize Pépé to St. James Park in an expected spending spree that looks set to begin in January given the stature of the player’s reputation regarding past achievements. Though that possibility is conjecture, it is hard to see where and how Arsenal could fit in the likes of Lang, or Sterling (or even Dembélé) unless a wide player was sold on.
