Cristiano Ronaldo backs Ralf Rangnick to succeed at Manchester United despite poor start

Cristiano Ronaldo backs Ralf Rangnick to succeed at Manchester United despite poor start

Manchester United struggle

Incoming manager Ralf Rangnick was supposed to oversee significant improvement at Manchester United, but that is yet to materialise.

The Red Devils have been poor and fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves in their last league game, while two disallowed Aston Villa goals saw them scrape through with a 1-0 scoreline in the FA Cup third round.

However, there is still plenty of time to turn it around.

Ronaldo backs Rangnick to succeed

Speaking to Sky Sports, Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to confirm that his ambition has not diminished, revealing that he doesn’t want to be at a club that is only fighting for sixth or seventh place. Indeed, it was a fourth-placed finish in Serie A that the Portuguese star deemed beneath him last season, swapping Turin for Old Trafford in the closing stages of the window. Ronaldo claimed:

“Manchester (United) belongs in (competing for) important things. We have to change that. I don’t want to be here in the club to fight to be in sixth place or seventh place or fifth place.”

The Portuguese too backed boss Rangnick to succeed in Manchester, despite a poor start with the Red Devils so far, that has seen performances get worse rather than better, calling for more time for the German.

“He arrived here five weeks ago and changed many things but he needs time to put his ideas to the players and on the pitch as well it takes time but I believe he is going to do a good job.”

Were Manchester United not to secure Champions League football for next season, could we see another change of club for Ronaldo, who is continuing to set records even in a poor side, or will he make it his mission to return the Manchester giants to Europe’s top table?
