Chelsea will reportedly pursue Rice in January / Moyes maintains strong stance on West Ham midfielder

Moyes determined

Chelsea are not being put off by David Moyes’ attempts to dissuade Declan Rice from leaving and by declaring the level of money it would take to acquire him.

Speaking ahead of the 2020/21 season, Moyes was adamant that his talismanic figure would be a West Ham player in the future.

“I’m confident he will be here [next season] because he’s under contract,” Moyes said. “Whatever club you’re at even the biggest clubs sometimes sell their best players because they get the right value.”

“But my intention is not to sell Declan at all, my intention is to keep him. But we can’t stop other clubs making offers, but the truth is we’ve had no offers or nothing, nobody has come to us.”

“If somebody then turns up and offers you a bundle-load of cash then that’s a club decision, but if you sign a five-year deal anywhere… if you sign a five-year deal with your company then you know you’re probably there for five years, it’s no different for football players unless somebody comes along and poaches you.”

Whilst bullish, the Scot’s comments appear to leave the door open ajar if Chelsea were to approach the Hammers with big money.

Rice in January

However, the door could be prized wide open come January. Reports surfaced on Monday that Chelsea will look to go back in for the 21-year-old in the winter window.

The Athletic understands that Chelsea would have gone stronger for Rice in the summer. However, some outgoing permanent transfers failed to materialise. The Blues had already brought in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva.

Frank Lampard has seen mixed results from his signings. Havertz has struggled to impose his dominant displays for Leverkusen on the Premier League. He has even spoken about the differences between Germany and England.

“The intensity in the duels and the runs is much higher,’ he continued. ‘It’s a completely different league and the games are very exhausting,” said the German international to Chelsea’s official website.

“The Bundesliga isn’t worse but I noticed differences. It seems to me like there aren’t any average or bad players here – everybody is at a very high level.”

Ben Chilwell has been one of the better performers. Rice shares the attribute that he would not need to transition like Havertz. Having been conditioned to life in the Premier League, Rice’s impact would expectantly be instantaneous.
