Chelsea dealt massive blow as key trio ruled out of Champions League tie

Thomas Tuchel gives disappointing update on key Chelsea trio

Chelsea face the tough task of tackling Serie A juggernaut Juventus at the Allianz stadium tomorrow evening in Turin, and will be made to do so without a cadre of key performers for Thomas Tuchel.

When giving his pre-match press conference from the teams hotel, the German tactician lifted the lid on injury concerns surrounding Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, and Reece James, while revealing further information about French international stalwart N’Golo Kanté;

“Christian, Reece and Mason are out through injury. N’Golo has tested positive for Covid-19”

It was hardly news that many Chelsea supporters would have wanted to hear as the Blues look to take sole control of Group H from La Vecchia Signora, who they sit joint-top of the table with on three points after both sided won on match day 1.

It remains unclear whether Mateo Kovačić or Saúl Ñíguez will replace Kanté but the possibility of Ruben Loftus-Cheek getting the call also exists after the England international put in a superb performance against Aston Villa six days ago in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Tuchel comments on Covid-19 vaccinations in football

When pressed further about the number of Chelsea players that received Covid-19 vaccinations, Tuchel responded from neutral ground;

“I don’t know, I simply don’t know. We are a reflection of society, the players are adults and they have a free choice. We should accept it. This is more or less all I can say. I know the situation is far from over. It makes you very aware it is not over”

On whether footballers should lead by example regarding receiving the vaccine;

“Do I have the right to say it? I’m not so sure. It is a serious question, vaccinations seems to be a proper protection, I am vaccinated but I don’t see myself in the position to speak out on recommendations”

With Kanté now set to miss the next two Chelsea fixtures while now being considered a major doubt for France’s Nations League semi-final clash with Belgium, questions will continue about if footballers should be required by mandate to be vaccinated as Premier League clubs push the issue.
