Chelsea & Man City lead the pack in FC100 rankings

The Premier League continues to flex its muscles in the world of football after ESPN’s FC100 rankings were released, highlighted by a heavy influence from the top clubs in England.

Both table-topping Chelsea and current league holders Manchester City led the charge in the voting, with each side boasting twelve mentions in the list of the world’s 100 top-ranked footballers and coaches.

The current pair of front-running clubs also combined for four of a possible nine number-one ranked mentions, including Blues star midfielder N’Golo Kante and Man City key center-back Rúben Dias.

Liverpool and Manchester United also featured prominently on the list, with the Reds also boasting two category-topping mentions while coming fifth on the list with seven total in the FC100, while United can claim five while sitting eighth in the table for club representatives.

The parameters of ESPN’s FC100 list, according to the site themselves, was not a “best in the world mega list”;

During the October international break, 77 ESPN experts around the world — from editors to writers, TV talent and former players — made selections from a list of more than 300 players and managers. Moreover, if the name they wanted was not there, they had the option to add a write-in nomination.

This is not simply a “best players in the world” megalist; The aim is to isolate specific areas of the pitch so comparisons can be made between those with similar roles. As such, every voter submitted 10 individual ballots, from which we crunched the numbers ahead of a final review by select writers and editors.

(And yes, we acknowledge that some players in certain positions might play elsewhere on the pitch at times; we made a call to ensure their votes were not split across two categories!)”

Top two battle in ESPN ranking mirrors the Premier League

It was not just players for both Chelsea and Manchester City that gained plaudits in the FC100 list, but both managers as well as Thomas Tuchel and Pep Guardiola finished one-two in the annual top-1oo mentions.

There is no surprise that Tuchel was named top boss despite the stature that Pep commands across Europe, after turning Chelsea around in the wake of Frank Lampard’s sacking to push the club to Champions League glory only to kick on brilliantly in the 2021-22 Premier League season which has them sitting top at the time of writing.

As for Guardiola, his success in the Premier League last year as well as helping the club to the Champions League final against the Blues while currently sitting just one point adrift of Tuchel’s men in the league gives him the nod as runner-up.

All told, the influence that the top flight of English football has had on the top-100 list once again shows why it is the most-watched and followed league in the world.
