at the American Express Community Stadium later today, but the English manager’s starting XI to face Pep Guardiola featured a key omission which could have massive FPL implications.

Key center-back Shane Duffy was dropped to the Seagulls bench for the top four clash, despite Brighton tangling with Premier League elite.

Should the Seagulls secure all three points in front of their home support, Brighton would climb above Pep’s City onto 18-points, and level with Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who themselves have a massive fixture tomorrow against bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Duffy came into the weekend sitting ninth amongst Premier League defenders in FPL, with 40 points to his name and and an incredibly low value of 4.4.

If the Irishman is to regularly be dropped to the bench moving forward, one of the best value for money players in FPL will be in danger of losing that status.

Has Duffy lost his starting XI place?

In what is a strange match day decision on the part of Brighton boss Graham Potter, this is the first time that the Irish international has been dropped from the starting XI during the league campaign.

Duffy has featured in every single minute of Premier League action this season, and has played a key role in Brighton not only challenging for a coveted European place, but establishing themselves amongst the early contenders for the four Champions League berths.

In an unexpected hot start to the campaign that has seen Potter’s troops beaten just once while boasting one of the best defensive records in the English top flight, it is certainly a curious decision to drop Duffy, given the magnitude of this evening’s clash on the south coast.

FPL players and Seagulls supporters alike will be waiting with bated breath wondering what this could possibly mean for their respective teams moving forward.
