Bertrand to be ‘realistic’ regarding contract length offer from Arsenal after Willian debacle

Deals done early

Arsenal want to seemingly get business done quickly this summer and not see a repeat of the last transfer window.

Whilst Willian was brought in fairly early on, it was not until Deadline Day when Thomas Partey was signed by the club, having already missed some key performances.

With the European Championships taking place, getting some business done will allow players to settle in.

However, it is important to consider some deals may not be able to take place until later in the window as dominos begin to fall.

For Arsenal though, time is seemingly of the essence, especially regarding the pursuit of Ryan Bertrand.

Bertrand’s ‘realistic’ contract offer

Arsenal are likely to be cautious about how they approach a contract offer for Ryan Bertrand having made a significant error in there signing of Willian from Chelsea.

The Brazilian was given a three-year contract on a significant wage and has since contributed just one goal in his debut season in North London.

With Bertrand turning 32 in August, Arsenal, whilst very interested in the soon-to-be ex-Southampton man’s services, will want to ensure they learn from the Willian situation.

Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella broke the story on Arsenal’s interest in Bertrand along with Monaco, AC Milan and Manchester City.

Kinsella spoke to The Gooner Talk this morning about the projected transfer, revealing that Bertrand will be ‘realistic’ about Arsenal’s offer of a contract length.

“I think that Ryan Bertrand will be realistic in terms of length of contract,” he said.

“I don’t think he’ll push too hard against what Arsenal’s wishes are. The Willian deal, 3 years, it raised a few eyebrows, I guess that maybe Arsenal would give him that contract, whereas Chelsea only offered him 2.

“I think that they might be more cautious in the future over that.”

Arsenal now need to beat the competition for Bertrand as they look to wrap up their first deal of the summer window.

Comprehensive discussion: Is Ryan Bertrand the continuation of a bad trend by Arsenal or an astute signing?
