Benfica latest club to be linked with City striker Sergio Aguero

Despite links with Diego Costa, it now seems Benfica are looking to prioritise a move for the departing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Statue for Aguero

Since the revelation that Sergio Aguero will be leaving Manchester City at the end of the season, a number of clubs have been linked with a possible move for the Argentinian forward.

Now 32 years of age, Aguero still has plenty of years left to play at the top level, and believes he can still achieve great things before officially hanging up his boots.

The striker was so adored at Man City that it has been decided that a statue will be erected in his honour, alongside the ones under construction for Vincent Kompany and David Silva.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be commissioning an artist to create a statue of Sergio to live at the Etihad Stadium alongside the ones under construction for Vincent [Kompany] and David [Silva],” Khaldoon Al Mubarak said.

“And we look forward to the opportunity to bid Sergio a fitting farewell at the end of the season.”

City’s modern history is constantly growing, with Yaya Toure having also been recognised with a plaque at the club’s academy ground.

Benfica in for Aguero

With Aguero on the move, much has since been made of where he might end up.

And one club which has thrown its name into the ring – according to the Portuguese media – is Lisbon-based outfit Benfica. The club supposedly moved quickly to secure the 32-year-old’s signature, as soon as it was revealed he would be leaving Manchester.

Aguero has never played in Portugal, having joined Spanish side Atletico Madrid from Independiente, before making the move to northwest England.

Benfica are noted to be on the lookout for a striker, and have previously been credited with an interest in Diego Costa.

If the Aguias manage to sign Aguero,  it is not known whether their offer to Costa would be taken off the table, or whether the two former Atleti strikers would team up for the first time since both were in Madrid at the start of the last decade.
