Manchester United & Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti
Over the weekend the rumours got louder over Man United’s possible swoop for Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.
According to Duncan Castles in the Sunday Times, Manchester United are gearing up for a major overhaul of their defence in the summer.
Looking at the Premier League table, some may question just how much Jose Mourinho needs to invest at the back. United have only conceded 23 goals in 31 league games: only Man City (21) have let in less.
Is a defensive overhaul more about United’s deficiencies in Europe?
Mourinho’s men were dumped out of the Champions League by Sevilla in the last-16.
Either way, the two defenders linked with possible moves to Old Trafford this summer are Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti and Juventus left-back Alex Sandro.
Umtiti confirms Man United want him
Samuel Umtiti has since spoken to French TV channel Canal+ about a possible move to Man United.
Crucially, the defender has confirmed that the Red Devils want him, as he made the following announcement:
It’s not only Manchester United. Other clubs want me as well, but my sole focus is on Barcelona.
It was my dream to play at Barça. And I achieved it when I was just 22. I’m very happy here, whenever I play and whenever I train.
It’s also been widely reported in recent days that Umtiti has a release clause in his Camp Nou contract.
That’s reportedly set at 60 million euros – a fee which is easily payable.
Umtiti also confirmed the existence of that exit clause in his contract:
Negotiations for a contract renewal have not started yet. My release clause is low, but that’s not what I worry about, I focus on the pitch.
