Barcelona-linked Wijnaldum remains coy over Liverpool contract situation

Wijnaldum in final year of Liverpool deal

Georginio Wijnaldum has, of course, spent the last four+ years plying his trade with Liverpool.

In that time, the Dutchman has firmly cemented himself as an integral member of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Despite his key role, however, the 29-year-old’s future at Anfield is actually somewhat up in the air at present.

Wijnaldum has entered the final year of his current Liverpool deal.

And despite having proven a key contributor to the Merseyside outfit’s success, an agreement over fresh terms, to this point, has not been found.

Reports over the summer even went as far as to claim that the Premier League champions had no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

Wijnaldum coy on future

Wijnaldum has also attracted interest from Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona over the last few months, adding to suggestions that his Liverpool stint may be coming to a close.

Should Wijnaldum indeed decide to join Barca, he could sign a pre-contract agreement with the Catalan outfit from as early as January 1st.

As such, the Liverpool faithful would no doubt love for their midfield star to agree to a new deal, and squash the speculation sooner rather than later.

However, recent comments on the part of Wijnaldum himself are unlikely to prove at all reassuring to Liverpool’s fans.

Whilst on international duty this week, the Dutchman was drawn on his contract situation. Wijnaldum, though, remained coy on the situation, actually appearing to be angered by the question:

“I can’t say anything about that.

“Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer? I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”
