Bale again on Spurs bench as Antonio gets start for West Ham

Bale again on Spurs bench as Antonio gets start for West Ham

Bale & Dele benched again

Despite performing well in midweek for Spurs, Gareth Bale and Deli Alli were both benched again as Jose Mourinho’s men lined up to face West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

The pair played against Wolfsberger in the 4-1 victory on Thursday, and were taken off before the end of the match, leading to suspicions that both could have some involvement in the fixture against their London rivals.

Mourinho explained why he decided to substitute the attacking pair after the match against Wolfsberger.

“We had a result and we had a team performance,” he said. “I believe they were positive like the team was.”

“I took Gareth off, I know in this process it was not so easy to play the 90 minutes. Dele worked hard. He got a yellow card and with the referee giving yellow cards so easily to us I didn’t want to risk it.”

Japhet Tanganga keeps his place despite Matt Doherty also being on the bench.

Antonio passed fit

West Ham have been given a huge boost ahead of today’s game, in the form of news that Michail Antonio has been passed fit to face Tottenham, as David Moyes looks to cement the Hammers as a European qualification contender.

Speaking ahead of the match, Moyes previously suggested that Antonio could have some involvement, after training throughout the week.

“Michail has a good chance of being available for Sunday because he’s had three days training,” the manager revealed.

“We’ve always been careful with Mich in trying to get him right, but he was close for the last game. We didn’t quite think it was worth the risk.

“He’s not been training with the group every day, but he’s been doing some individual work and hopefully we’ll know a bit more tomorrow.”

West Ham could move into 4th and above Chelsea with a win this afternoon. Meanwhile, 9th-placed Spurs will hope to open a gap between themselves and Arsenal, who sit just 2 points behind.

Many will no doubt be hoping for a 3-3 thriller at the London Stadium, like the one in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
