Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata reveals Arsenal support as a kid as Arteta admits he will not be calling Aguero

Zapata an Arsenal fan

Considering Arsenal could be looking for a striker in the summer, it proved timely when Atalanta’s Colombian forward Duvan Zapata, this week, suddenly revealed his love for the club as a youth. The 30-year-old opened up on how he committed to getting up early to watch the club’s matches.

“My future in Premier League? Never say never in football… when I was a child, I was always watching the Premier League: I was an Arsenal fan! I woke up early every weekend to see their matches,” said the Colombian.

Zapata has less league goals (10) than Alexandre Lacazette (11) this season. Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, recently confirmed that the latter’s situation will be addressed in the summer, with the Frenchman’s contract up in 2022.

Arteta praises Aguero

News of Sergio Aguero’s upcoming departure from Manchester City has seen footballing personnel across the globe reminisce about his world-class career.

Arsenal boss Arteta joined such discussions today, having had the pleasure of working with the Argentine as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad.

“First of all, I think anyone that has been close to Sergio would say the same thing. I think he’s been probably the main face, or one of the three main faces, that have lifted that project,” he said.

“You need some leadership, you need some quality and you need players to create moments when you start to build a project like they did. Sergio is probably the biggest face of that project.

“It’s not only the way he plays, it’s his personality, his charisma, the way he is loved by everybody at that club. It’s sad to see somebody leaving like him, but I think with what he’s done he will be there in their history.”

Arsenal were linked with a move for Aguero yesterday, but Arteta assured that he won’t be calling the striker, when drawn on the subject:

“No, no. We will see what happens with him in the future. “
