Mings demands El Ghazi apology

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has asked for fans to contact teammate Anwar El Ghazi with apologies, after the forward scored a penalty to win the west midlands derby against Wolves yesterday.

El Ghazi had to remove himself from social media on the back a torrent of supposed abuse following a Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City. Mings, in turn, has spoken out on how the abuse was wrong, with now the perfect opportunity for supporters to send their apologies:

“Good morning villains,” Mings wrote. “I really hope all you who were berating and hounding El Ghazi enough to make him suspend his social media, are in his DM’s today, apologising. A team game utilises a WHOLE squad and we need everyone… may your apology be as loud as the disrespect.”

Aston Villa’s twitter account, alongside several other players, have since quoted the tweet in support of both Mings and El Ghazi:

Dean Smith delight

Aston Villa were in desperate need of a win on Saturday, after a series of poor results followed an impressive win at Arsenal. However, to come to Wolves and take all 3 points was not what many expected, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s men boasting a solid defensive record this season.

“It’s a great result to come to Wolves, keep a clean sheet and get a win. We never really created big chances and when they countered and had spells of good pressure, we were indebted to our goalkeeper. It was a really good away performance from the whole team,” Dean Smith explaind.

“That’s four clean sheets from five on the road, that’s been excellent for us, we know we can go anywhere and compete. We need to improve our home form but it feels like there are no home games at the moment with no fans there.

Smith was particularly full of praise for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, after the Argentine put in another impressive performance on the back of his high-profile move from Arsenal in the summer.

“He [Martinez] made a superb save late on, his one-handed save in the first half was very good too. That’s what we bought him in for, he’s a good goalkeeper, calm and composed and keeps the ball out of the back of the net.”

Next up for Villa is a home meeting with Burnley, a key outing as the club aim to progress further up the table, away from the relegation battle and towards the European spots. Having already downed both Liverpool and Arsenal this season, the Claret and Blue should have no problem dealing with the pressure.
