Mikel Arteta drops hint over future of Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta drops hint over future of Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal

Lacazette extension still possible at Arsenal” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer”>Arsenal

boss Mikel Arteta has offered an avenue for continuity in the face of change in north London, after the Spanish manager refused to rule out veteran striker Alexandre Lacazette having a future at the Emirates.

The Gunners boss was quoted as saying that ‘anything is possible’ when it comes to the Frenchman’s future with the club, after it was widely expected that the former Olympique Lyonnais standout would leave Arsenal at the end of the season when his contract is set to expire.

It was also suggested by Arteta that issues surrounding and directly relating to a possible extension are based on a variety of factors.

Despite Arsenal having yet to offer an extension to Lacazette, Arteta has hardly been worried about the player’s work ethic or commitment during the process this season;

“I had no doubts about that. If I had, probably I would suggest to do something different with him in the summer, when a player could not find the motivation or if his interests are just with his financial future.

It is not the case with Laca, and he has shown that since I have been here every single day. That’s why he is a really important player for us.”

Frenchman firmly behind in the pecking order this season

Despite the fact that Alexandre Lacazette was one of only a very small cadre of relatively consistent performers for Arsenal last season, the French forward has had his status in the first-team clearly defined in the 2021-22 campaign.

Lacazette has featured just five times under Arteta, totaling a paltry 185-minutes combined across all competitions.

But despite the massive reduction in minutes, the son of Lyon has bagged three goals including a massive last-gasp equalizer against Crystal Palace on Monday to rescue an undeserved point for the Gunners.

It is likely that an extension would hardly change his situation at the Emirates, even if Lacazette did sign one, considering the club are linked with interest in the likes of Dominc Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins as transfer targets next summer. Nevertheless, there still could be a role to play as one of the senior – and most beloved – figures in the team.
