Line-ups: Arteta heavily rotates Arsenal squad resting Partey, Pepe and others for Newcastle trip

Partey, Pepe rested

Arsenal travel to Newcastle this afternoon, aiming to secure a much needed win, and boost their confidence and momentum ahead of the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie against Villarreal.

Despite the need for a win, though, Mikel Arteta has made a number of huge changes for the match.

Thomas Partey, Pablo Mari, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Bernd Leno have all been handed rests for the match.

In come Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Martinelli, Willian, Gabriel Magalhaes, David Luiz, Hector Bellerin, Mat Ryan and Mohamed Elneny.

There is still no place on the bench for Alexandre Lacazette or Kieran Tierney, who were revealed by Mikel Arteta to be in contention for the club’s trip to Villarreal earlier this week.

The Spaniard will be hoping that both can make a swift recovery ahead of the return game against the La Liga side, but even more so yearning for no further injury concerns stemming from today’s game.

No Willock against parent club

Meanwhile, Newcastle will be without star loan signing Joe Willock, as he is unable to play against his parent club.

The England youth international has scored a number of huge goals for the Magpies – against West Ham, Liverpool and Spurs – to help them push away from the relegation zone.

Steve Bruce has instead gone for a back-5, and pushed Allan Saint-Maximin into a second striker role supporting the returning Callum Wilson.

Miguel Almiron will be the midfield attacker whom Bruce will hope can provide the energy lost in Willock’s absence.

Matty Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey make up the rest of the midfield.

A win for Arsenal would guide them back into the top half of the table, whilst a Newcastle victory would all but secure their safety from the drop.
