Arsenal’s cancelled Florida trip

Despite being more than a year on from the pandemic’s first impact on football, the effects are still rife and disrupting matches in the off-season.

Arsenal and Inter Milan were both due to travel to Florida to play against one another and compete with Colombian side Millonarios and Everton.

However, Arsenal released a statement on the website confirming that they would not be travelling due to Covid-19-related reasons.

Following a small number of positive COVID tests among the planned party to travel to America tomorrow, we have sadly been forced to withdraw from the Florida Cup.

They went on to say how they would be planning some changes to continue preparations in the UK.

We are now making alternative arrangements in line with the Premier League protocols to continue our preparations for the new season.

Inter Milan also revealed they would not be travelling to the tournament due to the risks present and Arsenal’s earlier withdrawal.

FC Internazionale Milano announces that it will not travel to the USA for the Florida Cup in consideration of the risks that, at present, international travel involves as a result of the evolution of the spread of the pandemic, risks that have already caused the withdrawal from part of Arsenal FC.

Arsenal to play Millwall

One of the possible alternatives was to schedule some behind-closed-doors friendly games during the period the Florida Cup matches were supposed to take place.

The account Arsenal Fixture News, which posts information about all the club’s upcoming matches, claimed that the Gunners would indeed face Millwall today.

It has not been revealed which members of the ‘travelling party’ for Florida had tested positive but a number of images of training have been posted online showing the players who are still at London Colney. These included new man Sambi Lokonga who could have made his unofficial debut in the friendly.

Millwall might have fielded Arsenal loanee Daniel Ballard who joined the club on a temporary deal ahead of the new season. Ballard helped Blackpool win promotion in the League 1 play-off final.

Arsenal win 4-1

Arsenal beat Millwall in their friendly 4-1 with goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Pepe, Folarin Balogun and Calum Chambers.
