Arsenal target Jordan Amavi as left-back cover but who is the Marseille defender?

Amavi targeted by Arsenal

Arsenal’s left-back position is an area of the pitch which the club are currently light in. Kieran Tierney is arguably the first name on the team sheet for The Gunners but has faced fitness problems throughout this season and is even a doubt for Arsenal’s match against Southampton in the league despite being rested against the Saints in the FA Cup match on Saturday.

In his absence, Arsenal have chosen to select the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles against Crystal Palace. The England international struggled during the match to have a similar impact to his Scottish teammate and was ultimately substituted in the second half, with Mikel Arteta shifting the in-form Bukayo Saka to left-back.

The former Southampton and Portugal international Cedric played against his former side at the weekend in the left-back role and also looked to be struggling to adapt to the position. Often needing to cut back onto his right foot to cross the ball in, slowing down play and drifting inside congesting the middle of the park, leaving the left more vulnerable to Kyle Walker-Peters whose cross led to the sole goal of the game.

Arsenal are now being linked with a possible replacement for the now on loan Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian’s huge wages were a priority for the club to circumvent and therefore he returned to Schalke. The man tipped to be on the Gunners’ radar is Marseille and former Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi.

Who is Amavi?

Amavi is a player who has already played in England with Aston Villa but for the past 3-plus years has progressed into the senior stage of his career in France.

101 spoke to Get French Football News‘ Chief Features Writer Adam White to find out how Amavi has performed.

“Amavi has improved considerably in the last year or so, especially in forward areas but I still have serious doubts over his defensive acumen and concentration. His inconsistent positional play and tendency to give away possession in dangerous areas has cost OM goals too often in the last few seasons, even if those mistakes have diminished of late,” said White.

“At the start of last season he was dropped from the 11 despite AVB not having a reserve left back after being dragged off at half time against Rennes. His displays were catastrophic the season before.”

“However, that’s a while ago now and his aggression, intensity and pressing have developed in 2020 and he has become much more consistent defensively – hence this interest – but he’s still the wrong side of reliable for me as it stands. There are sizable question marks over if he could adapt to the increased pace and quality of the Premier League.”

Based on White’s comments, the difference in quality and consistency between the 26-year-old and Tierney appears to be rather sizeable. Whilst Arsenal are looking for cover and competition for the Scotsman, the club should also look to avoid falling into the trap of becoming stuck with mediocre players like they have with Cedric and Willian.

Ultimately, whether the player Arsenal sign is experienced, in their prime or a promising young talent, the business needs to be shrewd and not done for the sake of a bargain. It has hurt Arsenal before and it could very easily do so again.
