Arsenal’s creative drought
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Norwich City midfielder Emi Buendia. The Argentine was a creative force and standout for the Canaries who failed to achieve Premier League survival.
Arsenal have been in desperate need of some creative flair having found it difficult to break down sides this season. The pressure has fallen very much on Bukayo Saka, Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin to be the creators with Mesut Ozil left out of the squad entirely.
So much talk about macro issues at Arsenal. They exist and no sense denying or avoiding them but frankly a lot of this dialogue would be a low level murmur if Arteta could fix the chasmic issue his side have with actually creating chances.

The Gunners’ loss to Wolves leaves them in the bottom half of the Premier League with a trip to north London rivals Tottenham fast approaching. A Spurs win would open an 11-point gap between the two but were the gulf to close to just 5 points, suddenly the scene would look very different.
Without the necessary firepower, having Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang horribly out of form and in need of a goal, in addition to the lack in chance creation, optimism of a win is likely tough to come by.
Is Buendia the right man?
Arsenal have been linked with a host of creative midfielders. Christian Eriksen, Dominik Szoboszlai and Houssem Aouar have all seen their names touted as possible options for the Gunners.
However, Buendia provides the profile of a player acclimatised to the Premier League and the English game in general after Norwich’s recent return to the Championship.
The Championship itself is an untapped area which Arsenal have been reluctant to use despite the successes of other clubs signing talent from the second tier. Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma at West Ham, Joe Rodon at Spurs and Daniel James at Manchester United have all shown quality to some degree.
Buendia has the advantage of already having played in the top tier. Furthermore, his chance creation was outstanding. His accuracy of passes into the box in the Premier League in 2019/20 was 63.5% and averaged 3.25 per game according to Wyscout.
Whilst that accuracy has dropped to 55% in the Championship, it is occurring more frequently with 4.41 passes into the box on average per game.
Football.London reported that the ball is very much in the East Anglian club’s court regarding a possible sale with the player under a contract and not needing to sell. However, Arsenal may be willing to spend big in order to save their season.
