Arsenal have found the right clubs to send players on loan to as Tyreece John-Jules joins Blackpool

Arsenal’s loan troubles

One of the biggest aspects of a successful football club is developing young players and specifically using the loan markets to provide these assets with first-team senior opportunities to test their level.

Arsenal have had their difficulties in this area and specifically the case of Eddie Nketiah and Leeds stands out as a great example.

In the summer of 2019, Nketiah left Arsenal to join Leeds United in their promotion season. He was brought in with Arsenal expecting him to start regularly for the northern club.

However, Marcelo Bielsa found it difficult to drop Patrick Bamford and Nketiah was limited to appearances from the bench.

He still scored goals in the few chances given to him but Bielsa never seemed keen on using him as much as Arsenal wanted them to. He was recalled by then new coach Mikel Arteta in January and integrated into the first team setup where again appearances were few and far between.

Now, he has just one year on his deal and his future remains very much undecided with Arsenal at risk of losing the player for very little or worse, absolutely nothing in 2022.

A change in fortune

There is better news however for Arsenal. Of late, the Gunners have found that a number of clubs have shown real promise in developing their players. In the past, Charlton were known for taking players like Alex Song and Francis Coquelin on loan and they improved to eventually become part of the first team.

This has continued with Matt Smith, a young central midfielder, who joined the Addicks for the final 6 months of last season.

This year, Smith has joined Doncaster Rovers.

Rovers have a history with the Gunners too and last season had Tyreece John-Jules on loan where he excelled, scoring 5 goals and assisting 3 times in 18 appearances. Were it not for persistent and long-term injury issues, he would have likely performed much better but still impressed.

John-Jules, 20, will this season join Blackpool in the Championship. This move represents a level up and a possible make or break season with the Seasiders.

Blackpool too have a good relationship with the club having helped develop centre-half Daniel Ballard last season. Ballard helped Blackpool to the play-off final in League One where they were victorious to earn promotion. He has since joined Millwall for the coming season, a club expected to push for the play-offs.

Arsenal have plenty of young talent and it appears their loan department are improving in finding the clubs where they can guarantee time on the pitch and most of all, improvement.
