Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka

Saka injured against Newcastle

Mikel Arteta gave a somber update in the wake of a lunchtime three-point haul as Arsenal and England starlet Bukayo Saka had to come off injured against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium.

The Hale End hotshot was removed on 64-minutes for Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli after once again being included in Arteta’s preferred XI and part of a front-four along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Martin Ødegaard, and fellow academy product Emile Smith Rowe.

Arteta confirmed that Saka was unable to continue during proceedings and will be sent for a scan tomorrow on what appears to be a potential hamstring injury, according to Ben Dinnery.

The Arsenal forward was seen holding his quad after bagging the opener against the Magpies in the 56th-minute, suggesting to clubmate Thomas Partey that he may have actually hurt it whilst scoring.

Thankfully, should Saka be set to miss time if he is to be laid up on the treatment table, second-half substitute Martinelli scoring the second Arsenal goal today could give Mikel Arteta one less headache when it comes to replacing the England youngster.

Arsenal back to winning ways

Arsenal recorded a comfortable 2-0 win in the English capital against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, getting back to winning ways in the wake of their 4-0 drubbing by Liverpool last weekend that brought them back down to earth.

The result sees the Magpies remain bottom of the table and still without their first win of the 2021-22 Premier League campaign, while the Gunners are now back in the hunt for a top-four spot as they look to chase down high-flying West Ham whom they are now once again level with on points.

It was just what the doctor ordered, however, as Arsenal in recent years have gone on a poor run of form in the wake of a heavy defeat. But the result and the nature of the performance showed a growing maturity about this young Gunners side under their Spanish headmaster, who are defying expectations as they continue to push for an unexpected top-four finish come season’s end.

With Manchester United and Everton on the horizon in the coming weeks, it would be a continued statement for Arsenal to make if they bagged three points in each of their next two fixtures against two clubs with whom they were originally expected to compete with for one of the highly-desirable top six places.
