Arsenal boss Arteta on possibility of Willian & Gabriel starting vs Fulham/Ozil latest

Updates on the availability of a number of Arsenal’s stars have been forthcoming today, ahead of the club’s meeting with Fulham.

Gunners back in action

Mikel Arteta’s men are of course set to kick the new Premier League campaign off on Saturday afternoon.

The north Londoners will make the trip to Craven Cottage, for the first of the weekend’s opening round of English top-flight fixtures.

And though they have not taken to the pitch in a league outing since late July, Arsenal will no doubt head into proceedings brimming with confidence.

This comes with the Gunners having secured not one, but two pieces of silverware last month.

After first putting Chelsea to the sword in the FA Cup final, the capital giants followed up with an equally impressive Community Shield downing of Liverpool two weeks ago.

Latest on Ozil & more

As such, ahead of his side getting their new campaign underway in less than 24 hours’ time, Mikel Arteta this afternoon held his pre-Fulham press conference.

The Spaniard was drawn on a whole host of topics, including the summer reinforcements to his squad.

To this point, Arsenal have added Brazilian duo Willian and Gabriel Magalhaes to the club’s ranks, with William Saliba having also linked up with his new teammates following a year on loan with St. Etienne.

It was the former two of this trio, though, whom the focus surrounded ahead of Saturday’s clash.

When questioned directly on whether he could opt for Willian and Gabriel from the off at Craven Cottage, Arteta explained:

‘They have been training really well. They have adapted quickly. They are really excited to be here with us, really good energy from both of them. Big talent, both in very different phases of their career. One is already very established in the Premier League with incredible quality. And another one that has to adapt to this league but has huge potential to become a key player for us in the future.’

On the situation of Mesut Ozil, who was of course frozen out over Arsenal’s 2019/20 season run-in, meanwhile, Arteta added:

‘There aren’t any updates. All of the players that we have here are available here and they have a contract with Arsenal. They have all been training and putting in maximum effort in every training session and this is what I expect from all of them.’

Finally, on fellow outcast Matteo Guendouzi:

‘Matteo has been training like any other player in the squad. It is a new season and we had some really positive conversations between both parties, now he’s back with the group, he is training really well, he went to France to play with the under-21s last week and played really well again, and he is here.’

There were also updates forthcoming on the fitness of a trio of sidelined members of Arteta’s squad, with centre-half duo David Luiz and Sokratis Papastathopoulos among those set to miss out at Fulham:

David Luiz
Neck spasm. Currently being assessed and undergoing treatment with good response. Will miss Saturday’s match at Fulham.

Emile Smith Rowe
Sustained an injury to his right shoulder in training. Protective sling will be removed by the end of next week and aiming to integrate back into training soon afterwards.

Sokratis
Right calf. Sustained mild strain to right calf in training. Will miss Saturday’s match at Fulham. Aiming to integrate back into full training within the next week.
