Argentinian FA confirm the exit of Aston Villa duo from national squad

Argentinian FA confirm the exit of Aston Villa duo from national squad

Red-list controversy

Ahead of the September international break, the Premier League unanimously decided to prevent players set to play international matches in “red-list” countries from joining their national teams.

The reason for this is the disruption that it would cause the Premier League campaign, with those returning having to isolate in a hotel room for 10 days as per UK government regulations. This would rule them out of several games, but also severely reduce their match fitness, as the hotel would not allow significant training regimes.

However, Aston Villa and their Argentinian players reached an agreement with the selection team for Argentina, with an official statement revealing:

Both players [Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia] have agreed to make themselves available for Argentina’s vital first two World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Brazil but will not take part in the third international match against Bolivia.

These arrangements mean that Martínez and Buendía will only miss our Premier League match with Chelsea before being available for the visit of Everton to Villa Park on 18th September in order to comply with the UK’s Covid quarantine regulations.

Agreement honoured

It had previously looked as though this agreement may not have been honoured, however. Speaking ahead of the international fixtures, Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni claimed that:

“We gave the list for the three matches and there’s no doubt about it. The players are here for the three matches.”

However, today the Argentinian FA have today revealed that they have released Martinez and Buendia from international duty.

Worryingly for Tottenham fans, there is no mention of their Argentinian duo, meaning that they may be forced to undergo the quarantine regulations that the club worked so hard to avoid.
