Moyes has to deal with a pair of fitness doubts around Vladimír Coufal and Ryan Fredericks for the weekend, but clarified that Antonio is not one of the potential selection headaches.
“I think he has been firing on all cylinders and I hope he’s well-rested and has got some good training in. He chose not to go with Jamaica because he felt that some of the logistics weren’t correct.” Note: quotes provided by Ben Dinnery
There will undoubtedly be a sigh of relief amongst the West Ham fanbase, as their only true center-forward should be in the match day XI to try to push the club ahead of Everton in the Premier League. The Hammers sit three-points off the Toffees, but only one behind in goal difference.
Jamaican international enjoying hot start to the season
Michail Antonio has started the 2021-22 season brightly on all fronts for West Ham, as the Jamaican international has become the undisputed key goalscorer for David Moyes.
The London-native has hit 5-goals in six outings in the Premier League thus far, while adding 3-assists to his goal contributions in the league. He has contributed smartly in the Hammers’ Europa League campaign as well, scoring once against Dinamo Zagreb in the group stage opener, before adding a helper on matchday two against Rapid Vienna; both matches ended 2-0 to Moyes’ troops.
Antonio is now West Ham’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League era, and his progression – though late – has come at a key moment for the player and club alike. He sits just one goal behind joint-leaders Jamie Vardy and Mohamed Salah in this season’s goalscoring charts, and is currently on pace to unexpectedly crack the 20-goal mark.
