Two winless sides in Serie A will meet at the Carlo Castellani Stadium this weekend with Empoli playing hosts to Hellas Verona on Wednesday night as both clubs look to finally get their league campaigns off and running.
As of now, just a point separates the two with Empoli in 14th and Verona down in 17th. Empoli have so far managed to secure two draws in the league, but with them still struggling to move on from the opening day loss to Spezia away from home, Paolo Zanetti’s men are in torrid form still.
What’s worse for the club, however, is how they also lost to SPAL in the Coppa Italia at home, where Nico Cambiaghi’s late equaliser was not enough to see them through with SPAL netting a goal with seconds to go in added time. Back in the league, a 0-0 draw with Fiorentina and a 1-1 tie with Lecce is all that is on the board for Empoli after the loss to Spezia.
As for Verona, they kicked things off with a torrid 5-2 loss to Napoli in the league’s opening weekend, before registering their sole point of the campaign so far in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers, Bologna.
The club did put up a fight in the 1-0 loss to Atalanta last time out, as they had 14 shots compared to Atalanta’s 15. Nevertheless, their defensive fragilities were on display once again, as the Bergamo outfit had seven of their efforts hit the target and scored with one in the second half.
It’ll be a close game after the starts the two have made, and in truth, there’s no reason to suggest it will be high-scoring.
